Ira asked him to appear on his weekly local program (The Wild Room) and it launched his career. He said in an interview, “I owe everything to Ira ... My life just changed completely, like someone waved a magic wand.” His success on the program led to him making his debut on National Public Radio by reading an essay (titled SantaLand Diaries) about his purported experiences as an elf at Macy's department store during Christmas in New York. The essay brought him mainstream recognition with The New York Times calling it a “a minor phenomenon.” He went on to have a stellar career with many stories, essays, articles, and audio recordings.
